Happy Tuesday,

So Erran and I had a professional photo shoot a few months back.

On the day of the shoot, we felt amazing!! I have to say yea my body felt great, but what I noticed the most, was that I had so much energy, I felt clear, I felt motivated, my skin was glowing, and I just felt overall AMAZING!!

Looking back, I realized the last 30 days I had felt better than ever!! What changed? In preparation for the shoot, the one big change we made in our diets, was that we really minimized the processed foods we were eating. Like pretzels (pretzels and hummus are like most favorite snack in the world!) MMMMM!! We cut out most processed stuff for an entire month.

So It dawned on me as a by-product of cutting down on processed foods, we were also cutting down on SUGAR!!!! 80-90% processed foods contain sugar!! Even if you think your eating a salty snack- like chips, pretzels, or crackers, they all break down as sugar in the body!!

And it hit me like a ton of bricks!! That’s why we felt so good!! We had significantly cut down on refined sugar from our diets without even really thinking about it, and what a difference it made in how we felt.

With the photo shoot in the rear view, we found our hands back in the pretzel jar, and we weren’t feeling so hot. So last Friday, after feeling a little mucky, we decided to give it another go, and try to minimize as much processed junk AKA SUGAR as possible, and gage how we feel.

Of course we are still going to eat fruits in moderation and whole wheat breads and wraps. They both have fiber so they don’t spike your insulin as fast as the processed stuff. I mean obviously don’t eat a whole “bunch” of banana’s in one sitting, and a loaf of bread- LOL! but you get the idea.

Now if you know us, you know our motto is everything is ok in moderation, and we totally stick to that. I don’t think it’s realistic to say I’ll never eat pretzels again!! OOHHH the horra!! NO No NO!! It’s more about making a conscious effort to be mindful of what I put into my body, and make choices accordingly. Rember it’s not what you do SOMETIMES it’s what you do most of the time that make the difference.

In this case the less processed stuff and refined sugar I eat, the better I feel!! So BOOM!! Why would I want to feel run down, draggy, moody, and have skin breakouts. Right!!? That’s CRAY CRAY!

Sugar may taste amazing, it was designed that way- but It’s more addicting than cocaine!! For reals!! and it wreaks havoc in your body!!

*Side noteWhat is Refined Sugar Anyway?– Any sugar that’s not in it’s natural form – like high fructose corn syrup, which is found in almost all processed/packaged goods!

Here are 5 Reasons Why Limiting Your Refined Sugar Intake Will Increase Your Overall Health & Happiness:

1. Messes With Your Gut Health-

If your GUT(digestive track) is not healthy and happy- neither are you! The gut really runs the show- so your overall health is a reflection of how balanced and happy your gut health is.

2. Causes INFAMMATION:

Inflammation wreaks havoc in your body. Majority of issues or illnesses begin with inflammation. When your immune system is compromised -as it is with chronic inflammation you are more prone to illness and getting sick!! Ain’t no body got time for that!!

3. Messes With Your Hormones:

Simple put, sugar makes you CRAY CRAY!! Every notice when you eat a bunch of sugar, you feel really high and happy, and then boom- you feel exhausted and crabby in a matter of like 30 minutes. Yea they design it that way. Eating sugar releases an opiate response in the brain- like a drug, so your body craves more, and it keeps you coming back for more of the good stuff!! Your hormones are all over the place when your body is “ON” Sugar!!

4. Makes You FAT:

So in a nut shell when you eat sugar, your body produces insulin to help stabilize your blood sugar. Insulin increases FAT STORAGE!! It’s as simple as that! OH yea and it’s preferred place to store all this excess fat it feels like it needs to hold to, is around your Mid-Section!! Score!!

5. Makes Your Skin Breakout:

This goes back to inflammation. The rapid spikes of insulin after you eat something sugary causes a rapid burst of inflammation in the body. Inflammation causes or worsens skin irritations, acne, rashes, and rosacea.

I just encourage your to be connected to your body, and stay aware of how certain foods trigger you. Everyone is different, and we all have different experiences with food, so just tune in and be conscious of the choices you are making with food, and how you feel after you eat them.
